WEATHER

Weather conditions: |
| The spring was late and prolonged. By the middle of June the daily temperature did not exceed +3-5^C, dropping below the freezing mark at night. The precipitation was both in the form of rain and snow (the last snow occurred on 8 July). The two weeks after 12 July were warm with average daily temperatures of +10-12^C (some days up to +16-18); rains and cold returned in late July. Plant development was delayed: grasses and sedges emerged and shrub buds began unfolding on upland tundra only in early July attaining the full foliage only during the second half of July. This resulted in higher exposure of nests and chicks of waders to avian predators. Isolated snow fields persisted in deeper depressions and on shaded slopes through early July.

With the absence of rodents Rough-legged Buzzards mostly preyed on birds but the two investigated nests contained no wader remains. At dens of the rather scarce there Arctic Foxes only goose parts were found. Only one Snowy Owl was seen. Hatching in waders started during mid-July. The more common species included Grey Plover Pluvialis squatarila, Dunlin Calidris alpina, Red-necked Phalarope Phalaropus lobatus, and Ringed Plover Charadrius hiaticula, some Little Stints Calidris minuta and Ruffs were there too. Separate pairs and small flocks of Oystercatchers Haematupus ostralegus were constantly seen in the Bugryanka river floodplain. Wader clutches and young apparently fell prey to Herring Gulls Larus argentatus s.l. and Arctic Skuas (most Arctic Skua nests had only one egg or chick). The adult bird mortality was mostly due to Peregrine Falcons: three Peregrine nests contained remains of Dunlins and a Ruff.
